How Many Points Will Lead to a License Suspension?

Texas Point System

The Driver Responsibility Program (DRP) is a point system that tracks the driving behavior of those in Texas. The program authorizes the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) to assess surcharges to a person based on certain traffic violations which have occurred on or after September 1, 2003.

In other words, individuals can accumulate points to their driving record for each moving violation they commit. The accumulation of points could result in a suspension or other penalties, such as fines or even increased auto insurance rates. All tickets and their points are added to your driving record and will remain on your record for three years following the conviction date.

When you are convicted of a traffic offense in Texas, you will receive the following:

  • Two points for any moving violation
  • Three points for violations resulting in a crash

License Suspension

License suspensions can happen if you accumulate too many moving violations within a specific time period. Your Texas driver’s license may be suspended if you have four moving violations or more within 12 months, or you have seven moving violations or more within 24 months.

Furthermore, you may have your driver’s license suspended automatically for more serious violations, including:

  • Violations involving alcohol or drugs
  • Underage drinking
  • Crashes involving a death that are related to reckless driving
  • Causing a collision while uninsured
